ALOHA!
Join us (again) for the Hawaiian Juggling Festival. The adventures are endless: Swimming, snorkelling, lava watching, diving, golfing, hiking, horseback riding, steam venting and warm ponding, dolphin and whale watching (sometimes even swimming with the dolphins), and of course juggling with your friends from all over the world. It's even possible to go snow skiing. We will have live music and/or Renegade Shows every night, workshops every day, a van for tours of the countryside, and several kayaks and an outrigger canoe for ocean tours and moonlight paddles.

Location
The festival will be held at Spencer Beach Park, about an hour's drive north of Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. Spencer Beach Park is right on the ocean, with a lovely white sand beach, a huge lawn, level campsites, a court for the famous "volleyclub" tournament, a large pavilion for 24hr juggling, live bands and the Club Renegade shows, and last but not least bathrooms with showers. Turtles lurk in the coral off shore and Humpback Whales cruise the coast, at the '94 festival we saw whales breaching every day (smashing to watch while you're eating your breaky).

Close by are the beautiful valleys of the north shore (go to the Waipio Valley if you get the chance) and further south is the island's best snorkelling spot at the City of Refuge, and the dolphin hang out at Kealakekua Bay. On the other side of the Island, the lava is still flowing from Kilauea Volcano. The eruption has been continuous since 1983 with the lava flowing over beaches, homes, and roads, and creating new black sand beaches. If you have never seen an active lava flow, be sure to go there during the festival; or even better, stay before or after the festival and tour the Island. Watching the lava is an awesome experience. See the Hawaii Volcano Watch Newsletters for the latest on the eruption status.

It is said that of the 14 climatic zones on earth, the Big Island has 11. To the north lies the lush Waipio Valley, and beyond this green gulch you can find hidden beaches reachable by hiking across gorgeous mountains with breathtaking waterfalls...in the centre are the snow-capped peaks of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, the largest mountain in the world...to the south you can jump into the ocean from the 10-meter cliffs of South Point, the southernmost tip of the US. If you dare!

What to bring
This is a camping festival so travel light. Bring a tent, lightweight sleeping bag and pad, flashlight, and swim suit (sorry, Spencer is a public beach during the day). This is the desert part of the island (average rainfall in this area is 0.5" a year), so we don't expect any rain. You will need sunscreen SPF15!!. Also other sun protection: hat, light long-sleeved shirts, and more sunscreen. Extras: Hiking shoes, camera, snorkelling gear, musical instruments, surf boards, golf clubs (we have the annual "Earth Crack Open" tournament during the festival), maybe even some juggling props, and whatever other toys you fancy. (Did we mention sunscreen??).

Food
Join the optional Meal Plan. For $125 you will get seven gourmet breakfasts and dinners (dinner Feb 12 though breakfast Feb 19) catered by the finest chefs on the island. Last year we researched, trying three different caterers; this year we stay with the best one. The closest store and restaurant are a mile up the road, the closest good store and restaurant are 15 miles away.

Wildlife
There are no snakes in Hawaii, nor are there tigers or elephants, but there are mosquitoes, centipede, and many beautiful spiders (and I found a scorpion on my tent last year!. The mosquitoes don't care for the dry climate, and it never rains at Spencer (except for last year). No special vaccines are required, but it is a good idea to be up-to-date on your tetanus shots.

Transport Tips
Book your flights in and out of Kona. Some airlines have direct flights, but most connect through Honolulu. Shop around, good deals are to be found. If you have to spend the night in Honolulu, a cheap place to stay is "The Shower Tree Inn". They offer a bed in a quad room for $27, with free airport shuttle. Their phone number is (808) 833-1411: reservations are suggested. From the Kona airport you can rent a car, or ride to the festival in our tour/shuttle van for $10/person (Feb 12-19 only). Reserve the van when you pre-register, and call (808) 965-8758 just before boarding your Kona-bound flight to reconfirm your arrival time and assure prompt pick-up. We recommend renting (and sharing) cars whenever possible (there's no public transport on the Big Island): usually the best deals are thorough Aloha or Hawaiian Airlines, but shop around as prices vary widely. Always reserve your car far in advance for better availability and lower rates.

Bonus
We have Spencer Beach Park reserved from Feb 10 to Feb 20 for those interested in a longer stay. However, there will be no food or transportation or festival activities available on non-festival days - you are on your own. There is no extra cost to stay the extra days...
