New Circus for a New Millennium

The 9th national celebration of our contemporary circus culture

Is art something displayed by the talented to the passive audience, or is it that moment when the artist, the audience, the subject, the discipline, the environment, all combine to become something approaching a moment of mutual creation?

In our changing world, new media requires stars instead of artists, new audiences are fed sensation and not meditation. The dialogue of live performance is giving way to the monologue of digitised multi-media, corporate marketing and kitsch gimmickry. The Tasmanian Circus Festival attempts to provide a grass roots celebration of creativity and community.

2000 Circus Festival Training Workshops

Lone Star, Golconda, Tasmania, Australia

Monday, February 28 to Thursday, March 2, 2000.

Once again we are lining up some great tutors who will be offering quality training and skill sharing at this year's pre-Tasmanian Circus Festival training programme.
It's not only a time for serious training and learning. It's a time to make connections within the thriving new circus industry and at the same time have a relaxing Tasmanian wilderness experience. Although the festival site is only 50 km from Launceston, it's set amidst a vast state forest where the atmosphere is very relaxing to say the least. There are great tent sites, forest walks, wildlife, an organic cafe, bar and plenty of privacy. Camping is free.

Training

The Workshops cater for those working within the industry and those who have limited circus skills but have a reasonable level of fitness. Warm up starts each morning at 9 a.m. followed by a choice of physical training workshops. You can choose to do acrobalance, tumbling, trapeze, slack rope, tight wire or whatever. Afternoons continue with physical training along with sessions on street performing, clowning, juggling and performance presentation. There will also be festival performers around who will be more than happy to share skills. All tutors have been chosen for their knowledge and dedication to the circus industry, so you know you will be getting the best training possible. Physical safety will also be a major consideration. Of course there are plenty of other activities happening - games galore, swimming, combat juggling and then of course there is relaxing under a shady tree or talking shop at the festival cafe.

Trainers lined up so far include: Rita Van Opzeeland, Kathryn Nische, Rebecca Jones, Sue de Gennaro, Leonie Mills, Tom Greder, Frodo Sandven and Leo Bonne.
